Review:
I was stoked to finally get my hands on this one. It was released in 2007 as a limited edition for the Zoids Online Game, however the catch was you had to have a game account in order to get one, which meant that those that didn't already have an account would have to pay a couple of thousand yen registration fee, then there was a monthly subscription fee, it all would've worked out kinda pricey if you were only interested in the Zoid. So okay, I didn't exactly get it for a bag of KP nuts either, but there was also the problem of the language barrier, what with the game being in Japanese. Zoidspoison did manage to get a mass order open but sadly I missed the boat on that. At first I wasn't overly concerned, but as I saw more of it on the net I realised it was calling to me.
When this one showed up on eBay, I had to pass due to financial issues but Deathy suggested I ask if the seller would hold it for me, as he had done so with a different Zoid for her. I was a bit skeptical. I'd never bought from this seller before and he sure as hell didn't know me, but after a brief mis-communication, he agreed, I paid him what I had already saved as a deposit and a month later I paid the rest and had this gorgeous Shield Liger for my own.
Now, when I say "gorgeous Shield Liger" I mean gorgeous Shield Liger. He was molded in a beautiful pearlescent red that sadly the camera really can't capture well.
Shield Liger Commander comes with a CP-01 Beam Cannon unit like the MK-II and DCS-J only molded in black, but what really makes this guy stand out from all the other Shield Liger variants is the inclusion of an additional frame of parts (Consisting of a booster part for the rear spoiler, different set of guns for the dorsal, and a set of guns for the chest). While these parts are pretty cool additions, there's a distinct blox like design about them. I did hear on the grapevine that this frame was originally designed for a Neo-Blox, but don't quote me on that.
The build isn't overly hard, especially if you've built a few Shield Ligers before, and happily there's not much I can find fault with. The Dual Beam Cannon in particular was a nice surprise since in my previous experience I tend to find them loose, but the cannons on Commander were sturdy before I'd even put the cap in place.
I do however have one complaint about Commander, and that is the new gun on the back. It's attachement is loose and it's stuck pointing up in the air with the butt resting on the Liger's back. This could probably be fixed with blutack, but at this point in time it's not bothering me enough to worry about it.
Conclusion:
Shield Liger Commander SP is possibly the most beautiful Liger I've ever laid eyes on and with those additional parts he's more than just another Shield Liger variant. And if the new parts aren't your thing then a quick part swap and you have a gorgeous pearl red Shield Liger or Shield Liger MK-II.
On the down side he does attract a high price and is hard to get a hold of - especially for Zoiders who don't have access to YJA - so he may be a turn off for the casual collector. However if you have the determination to save up and hunt him down then bloody well go for it. Commander is well worth it.
